Colorado wins men's title, BYU tops for women

Associated Press

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Eastern Michigan's Boaz Cheboiywo overcame injuries to win the NCAA cross country title and Arizona's Tara Chaplin took the women's race Monday.

Cheboiywo, unable to train the last two weeks because of a hip injury, won the 10-kilometer race in 28 minutes, 47 seconds, breaking the previous course record by 7 seconds.

"I was not very confident because my hip and Achilles' tendon were bothering me," Cheboiywo said. "After I started I did not feel it at the first instance so I said, 'Let me try to go fast."'

Colorado's Jorge Torres was second in 29:06 as the Buffaloes edged Stanford by a point for the team title. Arkansas was third, followed by Northern Arizona and Wisconsin.

"We've been right there year in and year out and we've not gotten over that hill," Torres said. "Today was our day and we got over the hill finally."

Arkansas' Alistair Cragg was third in 29:10, followed by Colorado's Dathan Ritzehein and Notre Dame's Luke Watson. Alan Webb, the Michigan freshman who broke Jim Ryun's high school mile record earlier this year, finished 11th in 29:38.

Chaplin won the women's 6-kilometer race in 20 minutes, 24 seconds, also a course record. Georgia Tech's Renee Metivier finished second, 7 seconds back.

"It is tough to stay focused and just realize that I just had to get out there and run," Chaplin said. "I really pushed it down the hill because I don't have the strength to run the uphills as fast some of the other girls."

Brigham Young won the women's title, placing five runners in the top 25 for an 86-point margin over North Carolina State. Michaela Manova led the Cougars with a fifth-place finish. Jessie Kindschi was seventh, and Tara Northcutt ninth.

"This was a great team race," BYU coach Patrick Shane said. "This is what cross country is all about."
