SAN DIEGO -- Undefeated Long Beach State advanced to the NCAA women's volleyball final, beating Arizona 30-27, 30-25, 30-20 Thursday night.
Tayyiba Haneef had 21 kills as top-seeded Long Beach State (33-0) won in straight sets for the 29th time this season, including all five of its NCAA matches.
The 49ers will face third-seeded Stanford (32-2) in the championship match Saturday. The Cardinal beat defending champion Nebraska 31-29, 30-28, 30-21 in the other semifinal. Long Beach State beat Stanford in four sets on Sept. 25.
Cheryl Weaver and Brittany Hochevar each added 10 kills for Long Beach State, which will be trying for its fourth NCAA title and first since 1998.
Shannon Torregrosa had 14 kills for fifth-seeded Arizona (25-5), which was making its first Final Four appearance.
Logan Tom finished with 22 kills and scored five of Stanford's final six points as the Cardinal rallied from a 27-24 deficit in the second game.
Ogonna Nnamani added 13 kills for the Cardinal.
Nancy Metcalf had 14 kills and Laura Pilakowski added 12 for Nebraska (31-2), which lost for just the second time in 66 matches. |
