Coughlin shatters U.S. record in 100-meter butterfly

AUSTIN, Texas -- Natalie Coughlin of California successfully defended her titles in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100 backstroke in record times in the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday night.

Coughlin, who broke the American and NCAA record in the morning preliminaries of the 100 butterfly with a mark of 50.67 seconds, came back in the final to lower the record to 50.01. The American record was 51.07, set by Jenny Thompson in 1998, while Coughlin broke her own NCAA record of 51.18 set in 2001.

Coughlin defended her title in the 100 backstroke as well, posting a time of 49.97 to break her own American and NCAA record of 50.57.

Tara Kirk helped Stanford win the 200 medley relay in an American record time of 1:37.79 and also defended her 100 breaststroke while setting the NCAA and American record of 59.03, breaking the mark of 59.05 set by Kristina Kowal of Georgia in 1998.

Yulia Pakhalina of Houston won the 3-meter diving competition with 626.05 points, defended her title.

Auburn led the team competition with 337 points, followed by Georgia with 270 and Stanford with 215.
