California swimmer sets records in 100 free, 200 back

Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas -- Natalie Coughlin of California set two records Saturday in the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday, winning the 200-yard backstroke and breaking the 100 freestyle record.

The sophomore swam the 200 backstroke in 1 minute, 49.52 seconds, breaking her own NCAA and American record of 1:50.90.

In the 400 freestyle relay, Coughlin finished the first 100 leg in 47.47, breaking the American and NCAA mark set by Maritza Correia of Georgia earlier Saturday. Correia set the record of 47.56 with a victory in the 100 freestyle.

Coughlin set the American and NCAA records in the 100 backstroke (49.97) and the 100 butterfly (50.01) Friday.

Auburn dethroned Georgia to capture the team title with 474 points. The Bulldogs, who won the team title the past three years, finished second with 386 points. Stanford was third with 301.

The Bulldogs set an American and NCAA record in the 400 freestyle relay, with Correia, Stefanie Williams, Neka Mabry and Paige Kearn finishing in 3:13.71 to break the mark of 3:14.52 set by Texas last year.

Stanford's Tara Kirk set the American record and NCAA record in the 200 breaststroke in 2:07.36, breaking the mark of 2:07.66 set by Kristy Kowal of Georgia in 1999.
