STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Brad Keenan and Sean Rooney each had 19 kills as Pepperdine beat Ball State 30-32, 30-19, 30-20, 33-31 Thursday night in the NCAA volleyball semifinals.
The top-seeded Waves (29-4) advanced to the championship game Saturday against Hawaii, a 30-26, 27-30, 35-33, 30-27 winner over Penn State in the second semifinal. It will be a rematch of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship game Pepperdine won last Saturday.
Fourth-seeded Ball State (23-8) had three game points in Game 4, but couldn't convert. Pepperdine tied it at 31 on a long serve by Ball State, then took a 32-31 lead when an attempt by the Cardinals hit the antenna. Chris Van Reusen ended the match with a kill.
Beau Daniels had 55 of the Waves' 58 assists. Paul Fasshauer led Ball State with 13 kills, and Keith Schunzel had 54 of the Cardinals' 60 assists.
Costas Theocharidis had 25 kills for second-seeded Hawaii (23-8).
A 6-0 run in Game 4 put the Warriors ahead 16-12. The third-seeded Nittany Lions regained the lead 22-21 on an ace by Zach Slenker, but Hawaii scored the next two points and didn't trail again. The Warriors won when Carlos Guerra hit into the net.
Penn State (25-4) had three game points in Game 3 but couldn't convert.
Guerra finished with 28 kills. |
