COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Top-seeded Matais Boeker of Georgia beat Nevada-Las Vegas' Thomas Schneiter 6-2, 6-1 Friday to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tennis championships.
Boeker, a junior from Argentina, will face Southern California's Nick Rainey, a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Miami's Todd Widom.
''It definitely helps to have a short match in this tournament so you can stay fresh,'' Boeker said. ''I think the scores don't really show how hard I had to play. It wasn't a rollover.
''It's so windy out there that you have to be moving your feet the whole time. There is no time to cruise or relax. You have to grind every point and fight for every ball.''
Fourth-seeded Jesse Witten of Kentucky also advanced, beating Illinois' Amer Delic 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Witten will face San Diego State's Oliver Maiberger, a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 winner over sixth-seeded Andy Leber of Texas-Arlington.
In the other quarterfinals, Stanford's David Martin will face California's John Fruttero, and Georgia's Brandon Wagner will play Stanford's Ryan Haviland.
Martin beat fifth-seeded Al Garland of Pepperdine 6-3, 6-4; Fruttero defeated third-seeded Harsh Mankad of Minnesota 6-4, 6-3; Wagner beat Texas A&M's Ryan Newport 4-6, 6-3, 6-3; and Haviland, edged Portland's Travis Parrott 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. |
