COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Georgia's Matias Boeker successfully defended his NCAA men's tennis singles title on Monday by defeating Jesse Witten of Kentucky, 7-5, 6-0.
The top-seeded Boeker becomes the first repeat singles champion since Mikael Pernfors of Georgia won back-to-back titles in 1984-85.
Boeker struggled early, but didn't seem to falter after finding the momentum.
''I think I was a little nervous at the beginning,'' Boeker said. ''It seemed like I was scrambling for every point. I got the break when I wanted it and got some momentum to close out. Today my serve wasn't going well. I was having to grind for so many points, I was getting tired.''
Trailing 5-4 in the first set, Boeker won the final nine games to win the match. Boeker closed the season with 21 straight victories at No. 1 singles for Georgia.
In team finals, Southern Cal upset top-seeded Georgia 4-1, as Boeker scored Georgia's only point with his singles victory. |
