Griffin's homer lifts Tennessee, eliminates Sun Devils

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Jennifer Griffin's two-run home run in the
top of the ninth inning lifted Tennessee to a 3-1 win over Arizona
State on Saturday night in a losers bracket game of the Women's
College World Series.
Tennessee (60-11) advanced to play Arizona on Sunday, and
Arizona State was knocked out of the tournament.
UCLA (49-8) faced Texas (55-8) in another elimination game
Saturday night.
The Sun Devils (53-15) had won an elimination game earlier in
the day, beating Oregon State 3-1. UCLA beat Alabama 4-1 in another
loser-out game.
Christi Durant reached on an infield single to start the ninth
inning before Griffin hit her 10th homer of the season, and first
of the series, into the bleachers in left-center field off Katie
Burkhart (30-8).
Tennessee led 1-0 after scoring in the top of the fifth inning
on a bases-loaded error by Burkhart, but Arizona State tied the
game at 1-1 on Heidi Knabe's solo homer with two outs in the bottom
of the fifth.
It was Knabe's second homer of the day and fifth of the season,
and came off winning pitcher Monica Abbott (43-9).
Burkhart allowed eight hits and struck out 14 for the Sun
Devils, the third team eliminated from the eight-team series.
Abbott allowed four hits and struck out 10 for the Volunteers.
