Kunda powers Beavers past Kansas

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Chris Kunda hit two home runs to power
Oregon State to an 11-3 win Saturday night against Kansas in the
second round of the NCAA Corvallis Regional.
Beavers starting pitcher Jonah Nickerson allowed just one run
through his first seven innings to help Oregon State remain
unbeaten in the double-elimination, four-team tournament at Goss
Stadium at Coleman Field.
Oregon State (41-14) scored the first seven runs of the game in
the second inning before Kansas (43-24) was able to record an out.
Kunda, a senior, capped the scoring in the frame with his first
homer, a three-run shot to left field. It was Kunda's first home
run since April 2005.
Kunda also gave the Beavers their next two runs with a homer in
the fourth to make it 9-0. Nickerson's first hit allowed was a solo
home run by Brock Simpson in the fifth inning.
The Jayhawks added two more runs in the eighth. Oregon State's
Cole Gillespie completed the scoring with a two-run double in the
Kunda finished the game 2 for 5 with five RBIs. Gillespie was 3
for 4 and Mike Lissman 2 for 4 for Oregon State. Nickerson struck
out eight and walked four in 7 2/3 innings. Kansas had just four
hits, three off Nickerson.
Kansas will play Hawaii at 1 p.m. Sunday in a loser-out game.
Oregon State will play the winner of the Kansas-Hawaii game at 6
p.m. Sunday. The Beavers can win the regional with a victory in
that contest.
Hawaii defeated Wright State 5-3 in an earlier game Saturday to
stay alive in the regional.
