Spartans net three unanswered goals in second period

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Three unanswered goals in the second period powered Michigan State past Boston University in the first round of the NCAA hockey tournament Friday.

Tim Crowder scored two goals and Tyler Howells had two assists to lead the Spartans. Tim Kennedy had a goal and an assist and Jeff Lerg had 27 saves.

The Spartans broke a 1-1 tie after the first period with three second-period goals. Tim Crowder scored a minute into the period and Jay Sprague converted four minutes later for a 3-1 advantage. Late in the period, Daniel Vukovic took a pass from behind the net and put it past Terrier goalie John Curry for the three-goal lead.

Michigan State will play top-seeded Notre Dame on Saturday in the Midwest Regional final.
