Spartans knock off Irish to advance to Frozen Four

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Chris Mueller and Tim Kennedy scored power-play goals to help Michigan State advance to the Frozen Four with a 2-1 victory over Notre Dame on Saturday night in the Midwest Regional championship game.

Jeff Lerg made 19 saves for Michigan State (24-13-3). The Spartans advanced to the national semifinals for the 11th time and first since 2001.

Evan Rankin scored for Notre Dame (32-7-3). The Irish, the top seed in the region, lost for only the second time in their last 17 games.

Michigan State will face East Regional winner Maine in the national semifinals April 5 in St. Louis.
