BOX SCORE
NEW YORK (AP) -- Texas broke Indiana down early Friday night and then held off a Hoosier comeback for a 70-58 victory in the consolation game of the Preseason NIT. The Longhorns (3-1) started three freshmen -- Brandon Mouton, James Thomas and Royal Ivey -- for the first time and used a ball-sniping defense to put Indiana in an early hole. The lead was 20 points at halftime, 42-22, but Indiana climbed back into the game on some hot shooting by Kirk Haston, who led the Hoosiers with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Indiana cut the lead to seven points at 49-42, limiting Texas to just two baskets in the first 8:52 of the second half. Then Thomas scored five straight points as Texas restored a comfortable lead with a 13-0 run. Thomas who was scoreless in the first half, had four baskets and nine points in that stretch. Mouton and Maurice Evans opened the game with consecutive 3-pointers, and time after time Texas denied the Hoosiers (2-2) a decent shot at the basket, often forcing turnovers. When Indiana made a move with three straight baskets by Dane Fife, Haston and Jarrad Odle, cutting the Texas lead to 14-10, the Longhorns responded with a 16-2 run that included 3-pointers by William Wyatt and Brian Boddicker. The spurt was highlighted by a spectacular play by Maurice Evans, who knocked the ball free at the sideline, recovered it in full flight and zoomed in for a dunk. Evans finished with 13 points. Texas' defense limited Indiana to just six field goals and 26 percent shooting from the field in the first half and forced the Hoosiers into 14 turnovers. Chis Owens had 12 points in the first half and led Texas with 15 points and 14 rebounds. The lead was as much as 21 points in the first half. Nothing went right for Indiana. In the opening minute of the second half, Jared Jeffries lost a spectacular basket when his drive to the hoop was waved off and called a player control foul. Interim coach Mike Davis, who replaced Bob Knight in September, was furious with the call and used a timeout to argue with the officials, but the call stood. | ALSO SEE Mens College Basketball Scoreboard
