BOX SCORE
NEW YORK (AP) _ Titus Ivory had 24 points and Joe Crispin added 22 and Penn State ended Hofstra's two-year run as champions of the ECAC Holiday Festival, beating the Pride 74-71 Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden. The victory was the seventh straight for the Nittany Lions (9-1) and it kept Hofstra (7-3) from becoming just the second school to win the tournament three consecutive years. Hofstra didn't go quietly as Norman Richardson, the MVP each of the last two years, had his heave from just beyond midcourt hit the backboard and rim as the buzzer sounded. Crispin ended Richardson's run at becoming the first three-time MVP in tournament history. Jason Hernandez, Hofstra's starting point guard who missed the first nine minutes of the game while receiving liquids intravenously, hit a jumper with 11:04 to play to give the Pride a 54-53 lead, their first in the game since 6-4. There were 11 lead changes and two ties the rest of the way as neither led by more than three points until Ivory made one of two free throws with 10 seconds left to give the Nittany Lions a 74-70 lead. Richardson made a free throw with 5.5 seconds left, then missed the second intentionally but there was a simultaneous possession and the arrow went to Penn State. Crispin was fouled with 2.2 seconds left and missed both. Richardson then let go with his final shot at a tie. Gyasi Cline-Heard had 13 points for Penn State, which beat Princeton 65-52 in the opening round. Rick Apodaca led Hofstra with 21 points, while Richardson had 19 and Hernandez 12. The Pride beat Rutgers 58-52 in the opening round to extend their winning streak in the tournament to five games. The only other school to win the Holiday Festival three consecutive years was St. John's, which won it four straight years starting in 1984. Richardson will end his career tied with Tom Gola of La Salle, Jimmy Walker of Providence and Chris Mullin of St. John's as the only repeat MVPs. Hofstra beat Pennsylvania in the 1998 final and Fordham in last year's.
