BOX SCORE
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- Brett Nelson scored 18 points and Matt Bonner added 17 as Florida (No. 14 ESPN/USA Today, No. 13 AP) extended its winning streak to four games with an 82-71 victory over Georgia (No. 25 AP) on Saturday. Four days after beating No. 8 Tennessee 81-67, the Gators won their second straight Southeastern Conference game against a ranked opponent for the first time since 1974. D.A. Layne led the Bulldogs (13-9, 6-3) with 23 points. Georgia, which last Saturday upset Tennessee in overtime to move into first place in the SEC Eastern Division, lost its second straight. Florida (15-4, 5-3 SEC) led by as many as 16 when Bonner put back his own missed shot to make it 49-33 with 16:23 remaining. Georgia was able to close within seven on a 3-pointer by Layne, but Robb Dryden missed a 3-footer, and Nelson hit a 3-pointer to give Florida a 60-50 lead with 9:13 left. Nelson, who leads the SEC in scoring in league games with an 18.3 scoring average, made a layup on a pick-and-roll with 4:22 to put the Gators up by 12 and followed with a 3-pointer 40 seconds later that made it 71-56. Nelson, a sophomore guard, also had a game-high five steals. Playing before their third straight home sellout for the first time in school history, the Bulldogs again made it a seven-point game on two free throws by Layne with 1:47 remaining. They never got closer. After converting only 1-of-7 field-goal attempts to start the game, the Gators hit 15 of 18 shots to take a 42-33 halftime lead. Reserve guard Teddy Dupay scored 14 points. Dupay was playing his second straight game since returning from a Jan. 10 surgical procedure to repair a herniated disc in his back. Udonis Haslem had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Gators, and Major Parker added 10 points. |
