Jayhawks win 13th straight at home

RECAP | BOX SCORE

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- In the span of about 15 frantic seconds, Roy Williams went from being angry with Drew Gooden to being furious with the officials to being disgusted with himself.

Finally, when No. 3 Kansas survived their coach's technical foul and earned an 82-66 victory over Texas on Saturday, Williams felt relieved.

"It was just Coach being passionate about the game," senior forward Kenny Gregory said with a laugh. "We're used to it."

When Chris Owens drove past Gooden with about six minutes to go and Gooden got charged with his fourth foul, Williams angrily threw his suit coat several rows into the stands behind the Kansas bench.

Referee Scott Thornley immediately hit the Jayhawks' coach with a technical foul.

"It was the weirdest thing I've ever seen," said Williams. "I had no complaint with the call (on Gooden). I had a lot of complaints with Drew. It was stupid on my part."

Darren Kelly missed both free throws for Texas, then a moment later Jeff Boschee's fourth 3-pointer gave Kansas (18-2, 7-1 Big 12) a 70-55 lead.

Gooden, only 1-for-6 in the first half, was 6-of-7 in the second and finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds as the Jayhawks stretched their home court winning streak to 13.

Williams apologized to his team for getting the technical.

"Coach got mad at me for not sliding my feet," Gooden said. "That's like his pet peeve. He wasn't mad at the ref. He was mad at me."

Texas (16-6, 5-3) trailed by only two at halftime and sliced the lead to 37-36 early in the second half on a basket and a free throw by James Thomas.

Then Gooden, working mostly inside, scored six points in a 10-0 run that put the Jayhawks in command.

"He really hurt us on the inside in the second half," said Texas coach Rick Barnes. "They're an inside team. I think what you don't want to do is let them go too deep in the paint, and that's what we did."

Play was halted for several minutes in the second half when Thomas hit his head on the floor after going for a rebound. The groggy Thomas was helped away but returned to the game later.

"He's going to be OK," Barnes said. "It really stunned him, though."

Texas, only 2-5 on the road, missed 14 of its first 17 shots in the second half and hit only 31 percent for the game. Kansas was 22-of-37 from the foul line and Texas was 15-of-22.

Kelly had 19 points for Texas, while Owens had 14 and Brandon Mouton 11.

Boschee, the Big 12's leading 3-point shooter, was 3-of-3 in the first half and finished 4-of-6 with 16 points. Kenny Gregory also had 16 points for Kansas and Nick Collison 14.

Eric Chenowith had 14 rebounds for Kansas, which outrebounded the Longhorns 55-41.

When told after the game that Thornley said Williams' technical was automatic for throwing something into the stands, the Kansas coach got angry again and said that wasn't true. He went to the officials' locker room to talk to Thornley, but the officials had all left.

"I never want to hurt my kids," Williams said. "Fortunately, the guys bailed me out."
