RECAP | BOX SCORE

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) _ Even as he was ascending into the California record books as the school's all-time leading scorer, Sean Lampley could only allow himself to be mildly satisfied.

``Not yet,'' said Lampley, after scoring 29 points to lead the Bears to a 84-65 win over Washington State on Saturday night. ``I think looking back after the season, it will hit me when I'm done at Berkeley, but right now my main focus is to get some more wins and get (us) into the NCAA tournament.''

Paced by Lampley's record-setting season, the Bears are making a strong case to be among the 65 teams playing for the national championship in March. Lampley leads the Pac-10 in scoring and is averaging 25.1 points over his last six games.

The Bears have ridden Lampley's shoulders to a 19-7 overall record (10-4 in Pac-10) heading into a two-game series next week against UCLA and USC.

Lampley's big night against Washington State allowed him to move past Lamond Murray as California's all-time leading scorer with 1,693 points. Murray scored 1,688 points from 1992-94.

``Scoring was in the back of my mind but I knew we first of all had to get this win,'' said Lampley, one of only two seniors on California's roster. ``I'm glad it's over so we can focus on the task at hand, which is USC and UCLA. It takes a little attention off myself and the team.''

Milton Riley scored a career-high 21 points and added seven rebounds to lead Washington State (11-14, 4-11).

Lampley scored seven points and had a long assist to teammate Joe Shipp for a dunk in the game's first 4:30 minutes. Lampley had 14 points in the first half and made four of his first five shots, following up on his 8-for-8 performance in the Bears' 82-66 win over Washington on Thursday.

The Cougars tried defending Lampley with three different players, none with any extended success.

``He had the raw talent coming into Cal but he worked hard once he got here and that's what has made him so special, said California head coach Ben Braun.

California made nine of its first 13 shots against Washington State yet only led 21-17 midway through the first half. With guard Jerry McNair scoring 13 of his 15 points early, the Cougars were able to offset the Bears in an early hot streak and trailed only 45-42 at halftime.

Lampley broke the game open for California in the second half, scoring 10 points during a 13-6 run to push the Bears ahead 64-55. It was in that stretch that Lampley scored from three feet out along the baseline to move past Murray into the California record books.

Lampley, the Pac-10's leading scorer, also led the Bears with eight rebounds. The Cougars never recovered and trailed by as many as 26 points in losing to California for the second time this season.

Washington State shot 61.5 percent from the floor (16-for-26) in the first half but couldn't sustain the attack in the second half. The Cougars missed 10 of their first 13 field goal attempts in the second half and went without a basket for more than seven minutes at one point.

Solomon Hughes added 12 points and four rebounds for California.

David Adams added 12 for Washington State.
