George Washington surprises Xavier, stays alive

RECAP | BOX SCORE

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- SirValiant Brown scored 19 points and Chris Monroe had 17 points and 12 rebounds as George Washington held on to upset Xavier 83-74 and advance to the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 tournament on Thursday night.

Mike King added 18 points for the Colonials (13-17), who will play Temple in Friday night's semifinal. St. Joseph's and Massachusetts play in the other semifinal.

David West and Kevin Frey each scored 20 points for Xavier (21-7), which suffered its second straight disappointing loss. The Musketeers, ranked No. 25 at the time, got knocked out of the Top 25 by Dayton with a 65-62 loss last Sunday.

George Washington, which lost both regular-season games against Xavier, returns to the semifinals for the first time since 1999, when it lost to Rhode Island.

After Frey made it 72-70 with 3:03 remaining, the Colonials went on a game-ending 11-2 run to pull off the victory in the most closely played game of the tournament so far.

King completed a three-point play at 1:43 to make it 75-70. Xavier's Romain Sato made the first of two foul shots with 1:34 left to cut the deficit to four. But Monroe made a layup and two free throws, sandwiched around Lionel Chalmers' free throw for Xavier, to make it 79-72 with 37.7 seconds left.

King and Brown then each made two free throws to seal the victory for George Washington, which led virtually the entire second half.

West, the Atlantic 10 player of the year, was held to just three points in the second half and went scoreless the last 14:50. He did have 10 rebounds and five blocks to set the team single-season record with 58.

The game was tied 42-42 after a physical first half that included 22 fouls. There were 12 lead changes and six ties, and neither team led by more than five points.

Point guard Bernard Barrow, who sat out the last two games with a sprained right ankle, played just 13 minutes for the Colonials.
