Exactly 11 months ago, the world was closing in on Ben Howland.

His team, the favorite to win the Pac-12, was struggling. It had opened with back-to-back home losses to Loyola Marymount and Middle Tennessee State, which were disconcerting in their own right, but would have been less so if UCLA had improved even slightly during two 16-point losses to Kansas and Michigan in Maui.
