Friday, March 30 Maryland's pivotal player: Juan Dixon
By Jay Bilas Special to ESPN.com Jason Williams | Richard Jefferson | Jason Richardson
Juan Dixon is one of the five best shooting guards
in the nation, and one of the mentally toughest players at any position.
Dixon is fearless, opportunistic and craves the ball in his hands with the
game hanging in the balance.
| | | Juan Dixon wants the ball in his hands when it counts most. |
With his skills and his mind, Dixon can exploit any
defender. He played inside in high school, and
therefore thinks he is a rebounder and feels he can absorb a hard bump and
finish a play, even though his body seems to suggest otherwise. He is
wiry, thin and can't tip a scale at over 175 unless he's soaking wet with a
rock in his pocket.
He has a great mid-range game, and can pull up and
shoot over bigger defenders. He loves to curl off of screens, and he is
excellent off the dribble.
While Dixon is a potent scorer, he is just as dangerous on the defensive
end. He has great hands, incredible quickness and terrific anticipation. He is disruptive and plays a roving role on the weak side. If you
show the ball against Dixon, or make a lazy pass, he will take it from you
and turn it into points.
Against Duke in Durham, Dixon was
unstoppable, scoring 28 points and running defenders off of multiple screens
to free himself up.
He has a tendency to turn the ball over, but when he
is strong with the ball, he is incredibly difficult to stop.
