Iowa 1st Round L 69 - 56 Evans 19 Walker 9 Sears 4

with Jimmy Dykes

Ryan Sears is one of the most complete point guards in the nation that no one knows about. With Sears and Ben Walker, Creighton has two very good, senior guards who have won a lot of games. Opponents average only 62 points against the Blue Jays, so they defend very well. They will be one of the more difficult teams to prepare for because they play a high-post 2-1-2 offense that isn't very popular anymore. It will be a problem, especially if they win their first-round game over Iowa and the second-round opponent only has one day to prepare. If Sears and Walker are allowed to control the tempo from the perimeter, the Blue Jays are dangerous. If they run up against an athletic team that can make plays based on talent, Creighton will have problems.

How They Got Here
Creighton had won 11 straight games before falling to eventual champion Indiana State in the semifinals of the Missouri Valley tournament and losing to Iowa in the first round of the NCAAs.

The Blue Jays won the MVC regular-season title and finished with a 24-7 record, including a 14-4 mark in the MVC, and have solid non-conference victories over Georgia State, Nebraska and Providence to their credit.

Player to Watch
Sophomore forward Kyle Korver was the top perimieter player in the Missouri Valley this season, leading the Missouri Valley in three-point percentage (.471) and three-pointers per game (3.16), and finishing sixth in the conference in scoring (14.8 ppg). Korver was also an effective rebounder, averaging 5.8 caroms per game and finishing ninth in the MVC in defnesive rebounds per game (4.3).

With the Ball
Creighton was the second-best scoring team in the conference this season at 73.2 points per game, due in large part to the best backcourt in the MVC. The Blue Jays got double-figure scoring from senior guards Ben Walker (12.3) and Ryan Sears (11.1), while Sears finished fifth in the league in assists (4.29) and Walker was the team's leading rebounder (6.2). Creighton led the league in three-point attempts, putting up 666 treys on the season, and made a conference-best 7.87 threes per game. CU also crashed the offensive boards effectively, finishing third in the MVC with 11.0 offensive rebounds per game.

Defending the Ball
Sears led the charge on defense as well, finishing second in the MVC in steals (2.3) and helping Creighton top the league in scoring defense (63.1), scoring margin (+10.1), turnover margin (+4.5) and teams steals (9.35). Livan Pyfrom is an effective interior defender who was second in the Missouri Valley in blocks (1.65), while Terrell Taylor chips in 1.3 steals per game.

    Bracketology Report
1985-2000: The Blue Jays are the fourth team in the Eddie Sutton trivia question; as in, name the four teams Sutton has coached to the NCAA tournament. Sutton took Creighton in 1974 before scoring later on at Arkansas, Kentucky and Oklahoma State. The Jays, meanwhile, are making their third consecutive trip and have a history of playing to and/or exceeding their seed.
