Rush suspended by UCLA

ESPN.com news services

LOS ANGELES -- Sophomore forward JaRon Rush, who averaged 11.4 points and a team-leading 7.3 rebounds for UCLA last season, has been suspended from competition while the school investigates a possible NCAA violation.

Athletic director Peter T. Dalis said Friday that Rush's status will be determined when the school completes its investigation, and added there was no timetable for the conclusion of the investigation.

"We recently were made aware of a possible violation by JaRon and are currently gathering information regarding the situation," Dalis said in a statement issued by the school. "We feel it is in the best interest of the university to withhold him from games while we investigate the matter. When we have concluded our investigation, we will determine our next step."

Rush, who started 22 of the 28 games in which he played as a freshman, came off the bench in all three games so far this season, averaging 11.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists while playing 18.7 minutes.

Rush watched UCLA's 59-43 loss to Gonzaga on Saturday from the bench.

Saturday's game was the last sophomore Matt Barnes was expected to miss after sitting out the first semester trying to regain eligibility.

Barnes takes final exams next week, and the hope is he will be eligible for UCLA's game Dec. 18 against DePaul.

Without Rush and Barnes, the Bruins had only eight players for Saturday's game against Gonzaga, including one walkon.

Sophomore Ray Young started in place of Rush.

Rush, of Kansas City, Mo.. was suspended for one game last season because he reported late from a holiday break and missed two practices and a game.

"He told me he had been very homesick," UCLA coach Steve Lavin said at the time. "We are glad to have JaRon back in our basketball family."
