Maryland sophomore Chris Wilcox will enter the NBA draft, the school announced Monday. Wilcox informed Maryland coach Gary Williams of his decision this weekend. Wilcox then left school and returned to his home in North Carolina. The announcement doesn't come as a surprise, considering the buzz Wilcox created throughout his sophomore season and the Terrapins' run to the NCAA title. The 6-foot-10 forward is considered one of the top power forwards available in the draft and would be a lock to be selection in the top 10. "I think Chris will have a great career as a pro," Williams said. "In college, he has displayed outstanding attitude and character while continuing to improve his game and become a complete player. He has outstanding athletic skills and as a professional, he will continue to develop his outstanding potential." "Chris was a very important part of our national championship team last season and we wish him continued success in his career." Wilcox's ability to run the floor, crash the offensive boards and finish with thunderous dunks makes him an intriguing pick. His post skills are still developing but he continued to get better with each game this season. He probably had his best game of the season when he scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a home win over Duke. Wilcox's departure means the Terps will have only one returning starter -- point guard Steve Blake -- off the national championship team. The Terps also lost seniors Juan Dixon, Lonny Baxter and Byron Mouton. Andy Katz is a senior writer at ESPN.com. |
