Williams has surgery on thumb

CINCINNATI -- Cincinnati point guard Nick Williams is expected to miss at least a month after undergoing surgery to repair ligament damage to his left thumb, the university announced Friday.

Williams suffered the injury to his non-shooting hand during a recent pickup game on campus and underwent surgery on Monday.

It is possible that Williams will be able to return for the Bearcats' Nov. 19 season opener against Valparaiso.

The 6-3 senior averaged 6.7 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists last season.

Junior college transfer Jihad Muhammad is expected to take over at point guard in Williams' absence.
