Walters was All-Big Eight guard at Kansas

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Former Kansas standout and Valparaiso
assistant coach Rex Walters has joined Matt Doherty's coaching
staff at Florida Atlantic.

"I was very fortunate to have coached someone like him at
Kansas," Doherty said Wednesday. "He's a hard worker, a team
player. He'll be a tremendous role model for our players."

Walters, an All-Big Eight guard in two years with the Jayhawks,
played on the 1992-93 Final Four team when Doherty was an assistant
under Roy Williams.

He went on to a seven-year NBA career with the New Jersey Nets,
Philadelphia 76ers and the Miami Heat before playing abroad for
several seasons.

Walters spent the past two years assisting Homer Drew at
Valparaiso, and previously served as a volunteer assistant at a
high school in Overland Park, Kan.
