Liberty decides against bringing Dunton back as coach

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Liberty University coach Randy Dunton will not return next season, the school announced Wednesday.

The decision came a day after the Flames lost 79-78 to VMI in the opening game of the Big South Conference tournament. The team finished 14-17 overall and 8-6 in the conference.

Dunton's one winning season was in 2004, when he guided Liberty to the Big South championship.

Dunton began at Liberty as an assistant coach in 1989 and compiled a 66-85 record as head coach after taking over the program in 2002.

The university will conduct a nationwide search for a new head coach, Liberty athletic director Jeff Barber said.
