Preseason Top 25: No. 17 Cincinnati

17. CINCINNATI LAST YEAR: 29-4 '99-00 RANK: #7
Why No. 17?: Kenyon Martin is gone, and so too, are DerMarr Johnson, Pete Mickeal, Jermaine Tate and Ryan Fletcher. Eugene Land is out for the year with an injured knee and Antwan Jones is gone from practice for a month with a broken bone is his foot. Bob Huggins is concerned, and publicly making it sound as if the Bearcats are in serious trouble. But they're not. Once Jones is healthy, and he's expected to be for the season, the Bearcats have scorers, rebounders and defenders at every position. Cincinnati may lack a dominant player like Martin, but it'll still be tough to match. Kenny Satterfield returned after flirting with the draft and is a threat every time he touches the ball. Steve Logan, Leonard Stokes and Immanuel McElroy can be interchangeable with Stokes the most improved of the three. All but McElroy know Huggins' system and won't need a transition period. Jones can be the go-to forward with Donald Little, Rod Flowers and Jamaal Davis rotating in to provide the rest of the production inside.
Will Climb If: Cincinnati continues its usual torrid non-conference streak. The Bearcats have been untouchable lately in November and December, but have a few more bumps this season. Xavier will be a tough out, as will road games at UNLV, Dayton, home games against Marshall and a neutral game against Notre Dame. Potentially playing Alabama in Puerto Rico could provide a marquee matchup. Get through this stretch and the Bearcats will stay high in the polls.
Will Fall If: Jones' recovery doesn't go as well and he's not back for the brunt of the non-conference schedule. The Bearcats are vulnerable this year, making them even more of a target in Conference USA. Cincinnati will get every team's best shot, which could slow the Bearcats' progress in January.
Bilas Breakdown | HTV's Take | Team Page

"I am not sure about the Oklahoma rank. Seems like an awful lot of questions up front. A weak non-conference schedule could hurt them with no early tests."
Jeff, Falmouth, Ky.
