Preseason Top 25: No. 12 Florida

12. FLORIDA LAST YEAR: 29-8 '99-00 RANK: #2
Why No. 12?: Florida could easily be higher after reaching the national title game last year. But losing Donnell Harvey's physical presence inside, Kenyan Weaks' consistency on the perimeter and Mike Miller's overall versatility make the Gators still vulnerable going into the season. Florida shouldn't have any problems scoring in the post with Udonis Haslem becoming the primary focus. But the Gators have got to have another viable option to take some pressure off him. Matt Bonner was a hit on the Gators' trip to Europe in August but he's got to perform in November and December. So, too, do role players Major Parker and Brent Wright, who might share the other starting spot. The Gators are fine at guard where they've got the deepest pool of players in the SEC. Brett Nelson and Teddy Dupay are interchangeable with the ball. Nelson is the better playmaker, Dupay the better standup shooter but they can both get the Gators out of dangerous situations. Justin Hamilton might be the Gators' best defensive guard. The Gators got two steals when LaDarius Halton returned healthy this year, giving them an added bonus scorer off the bench, and Orien Greene was deemed eligible. Greene has the most athletic talent of the bunch, making them harder to defend.
Will Climb If: The Gators have a lighter schedule to start the season, but have a few well-placed games that can boost their standing. Playing host to DePaul and, essentially Gonzaga (in Miami), should give the Gators some power-rating and poll points. The key game will be at Michigan State where the Gators can do more than seek revenge. They can prove that this squad is up to the challenge of making another deep run.
Will Fall If: The Gators don't get Haslem some help. If Haslem gets into foul trouble, there's no guarantee anyone else can consistently score. Billy Donovan has other options, like freshman Bonnell Coles, but Parker and Wright will have to improve their production for the Gators to be a serious threat come March.
Bilas Breakdown | HTV's Take | Team Page

"Florida in the 12 spot! You're kiddin me right! You might as well put LSU at 11. True, we lost our main man Stromle, but LSU will give everyone fits. They will have the best defense in the SEC and finish third overall behind Kentucky and Tennessee. Florida will be an excellent NIT bid."
Lance Traylor, Ponchatoula, La.
