HAMPTON, Va. -- Previously winless Hampton earned its first victory Saturday in its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener, beating Howard 58-50.
Freshman guard Deron Powers led the Pirates with a season-high 22 points, hitting 4 of 6 3-pointers and also finishing with seven steals and six assists.
Hampton (1-6, 1-0), which came in hitting 22.7 percent of its attempts from beyond the arc -- 342nd out of the nation's 345 Division I teams -- connected on 9 of 25 (36.0 percent) against the Bison.
Howard (1-6, 0-1) was one of the three teams worse from long distance than Hampton, and it missed all eight of its 3-point attempts while shooting 30.4 percent (14 of 46) from the field overall.
Senior guard Calvin Thompson led the Bison with 18 points off the bench, though he also had seven of his team's 25 turnovers.
Howard center Alphonso Leary was given a flagrant-2 foul in the second half, earning an automatic ejection.
Hampton has won six straight against the Bison overall and seven in a row at home.
Maryland point guard Melo Trimble, considered a lock to leave the program before struggling in the second half last season, has withdrawn from the NBA draft and will return for his junior season.
Louisville's Chinanu Onuaku, who recently underwent a medical procedure to correct a heart rhythm issue detected during the combine, will keep his name in the NBA draft pool.
Andrew White III will return to the Nebraska men's basketball team next season after removing his name from the NBA draft.
