MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Derick Beltran scored 20 points to lead four Southern University players in double figures in a 79-67 victory over Alabama State in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game Saturday night.
Ahead 20-15 with 9:18 left in the first half, Southern closed out the period on a 21-5 run. Javan Mitchell sparked the run with consecutive baskets.
Southern shot 58.3 percent (14 of 24) in the first half and held Alabama State to 29.6 percent (8 of 27) to take a 41-25 lead into halftime.
The Jaguars shot 52 percent (28 of 54) for the game and led by as many as 19 points in the second half.
