RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- David West had 20 points and 12 rebounds and Romain Sato hit two 3-pointers during a 12-0 second-half run Saturday as Xavier beat Richmond 66-52, the Musketeers' sixth consecutive victory.
Xavier (15-4, 6-1 Atlantic 10) held the Spiders scoreless for eight minutes during its run, turning a 45-42 game that had the crowd of 8,048 roaring to a 57-42 runaway with just over seven minutes to play. The Spiders (12-7, 6-2), who handed the Musketeers a 67-59 loss
in Cincinnati in the league opener for both teams on Jan. 7, shut
down a foul-plagued West in that game, but had no such success on
Saturday. The two-time conference player of the year was 8-for-12 from the
field, almost all of his baskets coming from in close, and helped
Xavier outrebound the Spiders 37-23. Sato added 19 points and
Anthony Myles had a career-high 17 for the Musketeers, including 15
in the first half. Patrick O'Malley led Richmond with a career-high 20 points,
including a 3-pointer that pulled the Spiders within 45-42 with
14:43 to play. The Spiders had several chances to tie the game, but turned the
ball over twice, missed three shots and never got the chance again
after West scored on a drive with 12:45 to play, beginning the the
clinching 12-0 spurt. The Spiders, who finally broke their drought on Johnathan
Collins' short bank shot with 6:43 to play, never got closer than
13 again. The Musketeers grew fatigued and blew a 14-point lead at home in
the second half of their loss to the Spiders, but were playing for
the first time in a week and showed no signs of wearing down in the
Robins Center. West and Sato each played the entire game, and combined with
Myles, who played 34 minutes, to shoot a 22-for-34 from the field.
Sato finished 5-for-8 from 3-point range, and he and Myles each
grabbed eight rebounds.
