HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Tony Robertson scored a career-high 24
points Wednesday night to lead (No. 24 ESPN/USA Today, unranked AP) Connecticut to an 87-70 Big East win over Rutgers.
Ben Gordon finished with 20 points for the Huskies (16-6, 7-4
Big East) and teammate Emeka Okafor added 15 points and dominated
inside with 10 rebounds.
Robertson has been starting in place of point guard Taliek
Brown, who has been sidelined since breaking his left index finger
in the 95-74 loss on Feb. 5 at Virginia Tech. Robertson was 5-of-10
from the field and hit all 13 of his free throws as the Huskies
finished 25-26 from the line.
Herve Lamizana led the Scarlet Knights (11-12, 3-8) with 20
Gordon had three of UConn's five 3-pointers in the first half as
UConn built a 41-35 lead at the half. The Huskies led by as much as
nine in the period until Rutgers' Kareem Wright kicked off a 6-0
run with 4:20 left to cut the lead to three. UConn then hit
four-of-four from the line in a 6-2 run to close out the half.
The Huskies opened the second half with an 8-2 run and led by as
many as 21 late in the period on 52 percent shooting.
UConn came into the game unranked in the AP poll for the first time this
season. The Huskies climbed as high as No. 3 in the Jan. 5 AP Top 25 Poll with a 9-0 record, but have lost six of 13 games since then.
