EL PASO, Texas (AP) -- Jason Williams scored 22 points and Chris Craig added 20 Thursday night as Texas-El Paso defeated Western Athletic Conference co-leader Rice 105-62.

The Miners (16-4, 7-3) moved to within a half game of WAC leader Hawaii as they kept the Owls' offense off balance all evening, recording 10 steals and forcing 25 turnovers. UTEP took full advantage of Rice's miscues, scoring 39 points off the turnovers.

UTEP was a red-hot 12-of-20 from the 3-point arc. The Miners also handed out 27 assists as a team while turning it over just 10 times.

Rice (15-6, 7-3) was down just 30-23 with 8:33 left in the first half, but UTEP outscored the Owls 30-10 the rest of the way for a 60-34 halftime lead.

UTEP quickly put an end to any hopes Rice had for a comeback by opening the second half with another 30-10 run to increase its lead to 90-44 with 11:06 remaining in the game.

Roy Smallwood scored 14 points and handed out six assists for UTEP while John Tofi and Darius Mattear added 10 points apiece.
