West Virginia 67, Villanova 60


MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- Tyrone Sally had 20 points and Kevin
Pittsnogle added 18 Saturday, and West Virginia nearly frittered a
20-point lead before beating Villanova 67-60.

The Mountaineers led 45-25 before Villanova pulled to within two
points thrice in the second half, and the Wildcats made it 53-51
with 3:40 remaining.

But Pittsnogle had six points as West Virginia closed the game
with a 14-9 spurt.

West Virginia (14-8, 6-5 Big East) has won two straight and six
of its last eight. Villanova (13-10, 5-5) has lost three of four
since routing the Mountaineers 73-58 two weeks ago.

West Virginia's defense was dominant and its offense
opportunistic in the first half. The Mountaineers held Villanova to
28 percent shooting in the first half, closed the half with a 22-4
run and led 37-18 at halftime.

But the Wildcats scored 14 straight and held West Virginia
without a field goal for nearly seven minutes to crawl back into
the game.

Randy Foye led Villanova with 13 points, and leading scorer
Allan Ray added 12, all in the second half. Curtis Sumpter had 10
rebounds for the Wildcats.

Johannes Herber scored 11 for West Virginia.<
