NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Once Mississippi State started rolling, New
Orleans was no match for the Bulldogs (No. 24 ESPN/USA Today; No. 20 AP).
Shane Power scored 17 points and Mississippi State extended its
road winning streak to 13 games with a 74-59 victory over New
Orleans on Monday night."Mississippi State is a good team, make no mistake about it,"
New Orleans coach Monte Towe said. "They are going to beat a lot
of basketball teams this year. It was kind of pick their poison for
them whether they were going to beat us inside or outside."After a sluggish start, Mississippi State finally built an
eight-point halftime lead before taking control in the second half.Lawrence Roberts and Jamall Edmondson each scored 14 points,
Ontario Harper added 11 and Winsome Frazier finished with 10 for
the Bulldogs (8-2), who have won six of their last seven."We controlled the game in the second half," Roberts said.
"We had good movement and had some good offensive sets. We were
patient and got some easy shots."The Privateers focused on stopping Roberts, a preseason
All-American and reigning SEC player of the year. That freed up
Edmondson on the perimeter and the reserve hit 4 of 6 from 3-point
range."I knew I had to come in and make some shots," Edmondson said.New Orleans' Bo McCalebb, who entered the game 10th in the
country with a 22.5 point average, was limited to 16 points on
6-of-21 shooting. Chad Barnes added 15 points and Jamie McNeilly
scored 10 for New Orleans (3-4).Mississippi State shot 46 percent (11-of-24) from 3-point range,
and stretched an eight-point halftime lead to a 15-point advantage.
The Bulldogs led 43-35 at the break.
