Bulldogs roll to fourth straight win

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) -- Lawrence Roberts dominated in the low post and Winsome Frazier scored from the perimeter as Mississippi State (No. 24 ESPN/USA Today, No. 21 AP) took care of another overmatched opponent.

Roberts scored 25 points and Frazier added 24 to lead the Bulldogs to a 104-80 victory over Florida A&M on Monday night.

"We're tough when it's going inside and outside," Roberts said. "Winsome did a great job of knocking down shots. Anytime you do that, you open up the whole court and make teams come out of zones. Then, you also don't get the double- or triple-teams as much."

Roberts, the Southeastern Conference's reigning player of the year, was 11-of-11 from the free-throw line as the Bulldogs won their fourth straight and scored 100 points for the first time since a 105-91 victory over Auburn in March.

Shane Power added 18 points and Ontario Harper had 10 for Mississippi State (10-2), which never trailed and led by as many as 31 points.

All of Mississippi State's wins have come against unranked teams by an average of 16 points.

The Bulldogs, who shot a season-best 54 percent from the field Saturday against Xavier, hit 53 percent (34-of-64) against Florida A&M (2-6).

"We came out and played with some intensity early," Mississippi State coach Rick Stansbury said. "I was very pleased tonight, especially following the quick turnaround from Saturday night's game."

The Bulldogs broke the game open by scoring 11 straight points during a 13-4 run over the final 2:40 of the first half to take a 52-36 lead. Mississippi State then cruised after opening the second half with a 16-8 run.

"When we make shots from the outside, it opens up the looks for everybody on the whole floor," Roberts said.

Gary Ervin had a career-high 14 assists for Mississippi State and has 29 in his last three games.

"Any given day, anybody can lead us in scoring," Ervin said. "But sometimes, you need people to take that role and that's me. I'm the point guard, so I have to take that role and get guys easy shots."

Tony Tate led the Rattlers with 17 points, while Darius Glover had 15, Jonathan Kelly 14 and Orenthal Sumter 12.

Florida A&M played its eighth of nine straight road games to start the season and its third against a ranked team. The Rattlers lost to Michigan State (No. 20 ESPN/USA Today, No. 23 AP) and No. 1 Illinois by an average of 31.5 points.

It was Mississippi State's second of three games in a five-day span. Last month, the Bulldogs won three of four games played in a six-day stretch.
