LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. (AP) -- Deng Gai had 25 points, 10 blocked shots and nine rebounds and Fairfield limited Rider to one point in the final 3:20 in posting a 72-69 victory on Saturday.

Terrence Todd hit a go-ahead free throw with 1:10 to play and added an insurance basket with 25 seconds left as Fairfield (8-7, 5-1) handed Rider (8-6, 5-1) its first loss in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Jerry Johnson, who had hit five 3-pointers, missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer with :04 to play. Jason Thompson missed a rebound follow attempt on a play in which he was hacked and no call was made.

The 10 blocks matched a career best for Gai, who leads the nation in shot blocking with a 4.8 average. The 6-foot-9 senior from the Sudan was 11-of-18 from the field playing 37 minutes. He also had 10 blocks against St. Francis, N.Y. in 2001.

Todd finished with 13 points, Kudjo Sogadzi had 12 and Tyquawn Goode had a career-best 13 assists as Fairfield snapped Rider's four-game winning streak.

Johnson finished with 19 for the Broncs. Edwin Muniz added 11 and Thompson and Steve Castleberry had 10 apiece for Rider.

The Broncs, who rallied from a 15-point first-half deficit, took a 68-62 lead with 3:21 to play when Johnson set up Thompson for a foul-line jumper.

Sogadzi cut the lead to three points with a 3-pointer before Thompson hit a 1 of 2 free throws for a 69-65 lead with 2:28 to play.

DeWitt Maxwell, who scored eight of his 10 points in the second half, scored on a rebound follow with 2:10 to play and Gai got his 10th block with a rejection of a shot by Paul Johnson.

Sogadzi tied the game at 69 with floater with 1:35 to go.

After Thompson was short on a 17-footer with about 1:15 to go, Todd made 1-of-2 free throws after being fouled by Jerry Johnson.

Jerry Johnson missed a jumper with 56 seconds to go and Todd pushed the lead to three points with his jumper with 25 seconds left.

Gai hit his first five shots in helping Fairfield take a 20-5 lead less than six minutes into the game.

Rider cut the lead to 35-30 at the half by picking up its defense and getting Fairfield in foul trouble. The Broncs outscored the Stags 9-0 from the foul line in the half.

Gai and Goode both had big halves. Gai had 12 points and five blocks, and Goode had eight points, five assists and five rebounds.
