PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) -- Quincy Douby had 19 points, eight
rebounds and four assists as Rutgers opened its season Sunday with
a 66-46 victory over Austin Peay in a first-round South Padre
Island Invitational game.
Marquis Webb added 17 points for Rutgers (1-0), which held a
weary Austin Peay (0-2) to two field goals over the final 16:13.
The Governors opened their season in Western Kentucky on Friday
night before flying to New Jersey on Saturday evening.
Maurice Hampton had 16 points and Zac Schlader added 10 for
Austin Peay, which shot 30 percent and had 12 turnovers. Rutgers
won despite shooting 39.3 percent and committing 13 turnovers. The
Knights had a 45-26 rebounding advantage.
Freshman Anthony Farmer made his debut at point guard for
Rutgers with six points, six assists and three turnovers.
Rutgers took control in the first half by scoring 10 straight
for a 12-4 lead. The Governors got no closer than four for the
remainder of the half, and during one stretch went 9:35 without a
Rutgers led 32-20 at the half.
The Governors pulled within eight points in the second half but
Rutgers responded with a 13-2 run to open a 49-30 advantage with
8:24 left to play.
Austin Peay was 1-for-6 with four turnovers during the drought,
and got no closer than 15 for the remainder of the game. The
Governors scored 13 of their final 18 points from the line.
