Massachusetts 82, Duquesne 63

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Rashaun Freeman had 20 points and Stephane
Lasme 19 as Massachusetts won its Atlantic 10 Conference opener,
82-63, over Duquesne Saturday afternoon.

The Minutemen (6-5, 1-0), who broke a two-game losing streak,
began the game on an 8-0 run and started the second half just as
strong.

They did not allow Duquesne a field goal for the first 10:25
after halftime and led by as many as 21.

Bryant McAllister had 19 points and five rebounds to lead the
Dukes (2-11, 0-2), who have lost five in a row. Sean McKeon was the
only other Duquesne player to score in double-figures with 11.

Massachusetts out-rebounded the Dukes, 35-23, and shot 56
percent from the field while limiting Duquesne to 42 percent.

The Minutemen had lost six consecutive conference openers, last
winning one on Jan. 5, 1999, over now-ACC member Virginia Tech,
55-40.

It was Massachusetts' largest win against a conference team
since an 85-59 win at home over Fordham on Feb. 3, 2001. It was the
largest conference road victory since a 78-46 win at Rhode Island
on Jan. 30, 2001.

James Life and Brandon Thomas added 11 and 10 points,
respectively, for Massachusetts.
