JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- Trey Johnson scored a career-high 40
points to lead Jackson State to an 84-63 victory over Texas
Southern on Monday night.
Johnson followed a 23-point game two days earlier against
Prairie View by surpassing his previous best of 38 set two weeks
ago against Alabama A&M, and leading the Tigers (8-10, 4-2
Southwestern Athletic Conference) to their second straight win.
Johnson has led Jackson State in scoring in all but two games
He had 23 points in the first half against Texas Southern (3-12,
1-4), which closed to within 39-38 early in the second half on a
basket by Ike Count.
Johnson scored eight of Jackson State's next 12 points to put
the Tigers in control.
Julius Young added 17 points and Ernest Hassel had 12 for
Jackson State, which outrebounded Texas Southern 41-33 and forced
Christopher Moore led Texas Southern with 13 points, and Justin
Wilson added 11.
Maryland point guard Melo Trimble, considered a lock to leave the program before struggling in the second half last season, has withdrawn from the NBA draft and will return for his junior season.
Louisville's Chinanu Onuaku, who recently underwent a medical procedure to correct a heart rhythm issue detected during the combine, will keep his name in the NBA draft pool.
Andrew White III will return to the Nebraska men's basketball team next season after removing his name from the NBA draft.
