RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Sammy Hernandez scored five of his eight
points in overtime, including the 3-pointer that gave George Mason
the lead for good, and the Patriots beat Georgia State 61-56 in the
Colonial Athletic Association quarterfinals Saturday.
Hernandez' 3-pointer with 3:29 left in the extra period gave
second-seeded George Mason a 52-49 lead, and they barely held on
against the 10th-seeded Panthers (7-22).The Patriots (23-7), who got 19 points from Will Thomas and 12
points and 13 rebounds from Jai Lewis, will play Virginia
Commonwealth or Hofstra in Sunday's semifinals.Georgia State, with former coach Lefty Driesell looking on from
the stands, used an 11-1 run in the second half to take a 43-41
lead with 4:20 left, but needed two free throws by Herman Favors
with 33 seconds to play in regulation to tie it at 47.After Rashad Chase made two free throws for the Panthers to
begin the extra period, Hernandez made a layup and then a
3-pointer, giving George Mason the lead for good. The Panthers twice closed to within a point, but Tony Skinn and
then Thomas answered with layups and the co-CAA champions held on
to avoid an embarrassing defeat.
