ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- Will Whittington scored 14 of his 17 points
in the second half, securing Marist's 68-62 victory over Canisius
in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals
Jared Jordan scored 14 and Ryan Stilphen had 12 rebounds for the
Red Foxes (19-9), who advanced to the semifinals for the first time
since 2001 and only the third time since joining the MAAC in 1997.
Marist, the 10-team tournament's third seed, will face
second-seeded Iona on Sunday.Kevin Downey scored 16 and Chuck Harris and Darnell Wilson had
10 rebounds each for Canisius (9-20), which finished 24-of-61 from
the field -- including Wilson muffing a dunk. The Golden Griffins erased an 11-point second-half deficit to
cut Marist's lead to 62-58 on Joe Young's putback with 58 seconds
remaining.Whittington hit two free throws and the Golden Griffins failed
to respond, missing three shots -- including two Jon Popofski
3-point attempts -- on their next possession. Many had projected Canisius to contend for the conference title.
Instead, the Golden Griffins' nine wins are their fewest since
going 8-22 in 1991-92, raising questions about coach Mike
MacDonald's status.Canisius is 108-153 during MacDonald's nine-year tenure, a
stretch in which the program has enjoyed only two winning seasons
and four 20-loss campaigns.
