FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) -- Tyler Smith scored 18 of his 26
points in the second half as Colorado State survived a scare from
Division II Colorado State-Pueblo and won 76-67 Friday night.
The junior college transfer from Northeastern Junior College was
8-for-19 shooting with two 3-pointers, one that gave Colorado State
(1-0) its first lead in the second half. Jason Smith added 19
points and seven rebounds in the season opener for the Rams.
Major Willette led Colorado State-Pueblo with 22 points. The
game was an exhibition game for the Thunderwolves of the Rocky
Mountain Athletic Conference.
Tyler Smith's 3-pointer put Colorado State up 43-42 with 12:01
left in the second half, but Willette's outside shooting kept the
Thunderwolves close. Willette's basket on a goaltending call with
3:43 remaining made it 60-47.
Jason Smith and Tyler Smith scored four points each in a mini
8-0 run that put Colorado State ahead 68-57. Colorado State-Pueblo
never got closer than seven points over the final 2:06.
Colorado State-Pueblo took a 33-28 lead into halftime as
Willette scored five points of his 13 first-half points in the last
3:17 of the half.
Colorado State-Pueblo finished 9-for-20 on 3-pointers, but
turned the ball over 25 times.
