DENVER (AP) -- Jason Smith scored 24 points and had 9 rebounds Colorado State beat Denver 81-73 Wednesday night.
Tim Denson added 18 points and 2 rebounds for the Rams (4-2).
The lead changed 11 times during the game and the Pioneers led 46-38 at halftime. Denver led with 6:07 remaining in the game but the Rams pulled ahead for good after junior guard Tyler Smith hit a 3-pointer.
Jason Smith fouled out with 5:04 remaining in the game. The Rams scored six free throws in the game's final 1:15.
Colorado State shot 52.7 percent from the field during the game while Denver shot 52 percent.
Denver will next face South Dakota State on Sunday.
Maryland point guard Melo Trimble, considered a lock to leave the program before struggling in the second half last season, has withdrawn from the NBA draft and will return for his junior season.
