IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Darnell Harris buried a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lead LaSalle past Texas-Pan American 64-63 Saturday.
Rodney Green scored 16 points and Harris added 15 for LaSalle (4-1), which narrowly avoided defeat at the hands of the Broncos (5-3), a Division I independent with just three wins over D-I schools last season.
Texas-Pan American's Brian Burrell missed a free throw with six seconds left and the Broncos up 63-61. LaSalle grabbed the rebound, pushed the ball up the floor and found Harris, who was heavily guarded but nonetheless sent the upset-minded Broncos to defeat.
Paul Stoll gave Texas-Pan American a 60-59 lead with 1:10 left on a 3-pointer that bounced off the front of the rim but fell in. LaSalle got the ball back with a six-second differential between the game and shot clock, but rushed a quick jumper that missed the mark.
The Broncos then hit three free throws to push their lead to 63-59. LaSalle's Rodney Green answered with two from the line, cutting Texas-Pan American's lead in half.
The Explorers erased a five-point halftime deficit and led by as much as six midway through the second half, but the Broncos tied the game at 57 on a pair of Colin Lien free throws with 3:54 left.
After trailing by five early, Texas-Pan American outscored LaSalle 24-14 over the final 13 minutes of the first half and led 30-25 at the break.
Dexter Shankle capped the stretch with a fast-break layup with 35 seconds left in the first half.
Burrell led Texas-Pan American with 16 points.
