BOSTON (AP) -- Tyrese Rice scored seven of his 25 points during a 13-0 run that carried Boston College to an 87-82 win over Northeastern on Sunday, spoiling the return of Huskies' first-year coach Bill Coen.
Sean Marshall added 19 points and Sean Williams 16 for the Eagles (8-4), who snapped a two-game losing streak.BC was without leading scorer Jared Dudley for the second straight game. Dudley, averaging 18.8 points per game, was sidelined with a left foot injury.Bennet Davis paced the Huskies (3-9) with 27 points. Matt Janning scored 21 points -- 18 in the second half -- and Eugene Spates 20 as Northeastern overcame an 18-point first-half deficit to challenge the Eagles.Northeastern, which trailed by 15 points at halftime, opened the second half by scoring 22 of the first 29 points to tie the game at 59-all on Janning's baseline jumper with 13:21 to play. Janning scored 16 points in the spree, nailing three shots from beyond the 3-point line.After the Huskies' surge, the game was tied twice before BC took the lead for good on Williams' short jumper in the lane that triggered the 13-0 run. Rice scored the final seven points in the spree.Rice's first basket came off a steal and breakaway layup, he followed that with a driving scoop shot in the lane, and capped it with a 3-point play after scoring on an offensive rebound, making it 81-70 with 3:46 left.NU made one last run, cutting it to 83-80 with 62 seconds left on Spates' 3-pointer, but Rice nailed a 3 with 23.2 seconds left to help seal it.Coen, a nine-year assistant under BC coach Al Skinner from 1997-2006, was given a nice hand during pregame introductions.The Eagles, who shot 70 percent in the opening half, led 52-37 at the break.BC started quickly, hitting its initial six shots from the floor en route to a 13-4 lead. The Eagles pushed their lead to 46-28 on Rice's 3-pointer from the left wing with 3:46 left in the half.
