PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Darren Cooper scored a career-high 28 points as Portland defeated Loyola Marymount 81-65 Monday night.
Taishi Ito added 16 points for the Pilots (6-12, 2-0 West Coast Conference), who led the entire way while shooting a season-high 63 percent. The victory marked the first time in six seasons that Portland has started its conference season with two victories.Matthew Knight (8-10, 0-2) led the Lions with 24 points.Ito, Cooper and Ethan Niedermeyer hit consecutive 3-pointers to give the Pilots a 20-11 lead. After a Loyola Marymount basket, the Pilots reeled off 10 straight points to take a 30-13 lead. The Pilots led 41-18 at the half.The Lions had an 11-2 run to start the second half, but Portland quickly thwarted the comeback with a 14-4 spurt.Loyola Marymount shot 38 percent for the game.
