Syracuse 68, Rutgers 58

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) -- Eric Devendorf came off the bench to score 19 points and lead short-handed Syracuse to a 68-58 victory over cold-shooting Rutgers Wednesday night.

Darryl Watkins added nine points and 12 rebounds for Syracuse (13-4, 2-1 Big East), which claimed its sixth straight victory over the Scarlet Knights (8-8, 1-2 Big East).

Courtney Nelson led Rutgers with a career-high 14 and Adrian Hill added 10.

The Orangemen played their third straight game without forward Matt Gorman (severe ankle sprain) and had just eight scholarship players suited up.

Rutgers shot just 29.5 percent (18-for-61) and was 5-for-24 from 3-point range, while Syracuse used its height advantage to block six shots.

Syracuse took control at the outset of the second half. Holding a 28-25 lead, the Orangemen used their superior size to go on an 11-5 run and open a 39-30 margin. Demetris Nichols, who finished with 12 points, scored five during the run and Watkins added four.

Rutgers never got closer than six for the remainder of the game, and Syracuse opened its biggest lead at 60-43 with 4:54 remaining. The Knights responded with a 15-4 run to cut it to 64-58 with 54.4 seconds remaining. But Nichols and Devendorf each hit two foul shots to seal the win. The Orangemen finished 18-for-21 from the foul line.
