HAMMOND, La. (AP) -- Warrell Span led Southeastern Louisiana with 14 points and the Lions overcame a turnover-plagued contest using a 19-4 run over the final 7:40 to defeat Southern University at New Orleans 57-44 on Wednesday.
Tavaris Nance added 12 points, while Patrick Sullivan had nine points, seven rebounds and four blocks.Southeastern Louisiana (8-5), which played without leading scorer Kevyn Green, trailed 25-24 at halftime and 30-24 after a jumper by SUNO's Kevin Thomas with 18:30 remaining in the game.Despite committing a season-high 23 turnovers and going 11-for-24 from the free throw line, the Lions kept the game close by holding SUNO (2-3) to 25 percent (7-for-28) shooting from the floor in the second half and 30 percent (16-for-54) for the game.SUNO, which was playing for the first time since Dec. 8, was led by Thomas who led all scorers with 22 points.Clipton Warren's basket with 7:53 left in the game gave the Knights a 40-38 lead, but Southeastern tied the game on a pair of free throws by Daryl Arnold. Southeastern took the lead for good, 42-40, on Dekyron Nicks' layup with 6:31 left before Span hit a reverse layup for a 44-40 advantage.At the 5:30 mark, Span blocked a layup attempt by Thomas leading to a dunk by Nance to put Southeastern ahead, 46-40. Thomas cut the lead to 46-42 with a layup at the 4:17 mark, but Southeastern scored the next nine points, with Nance scoring the final four on a breakaway dunk and a layup to put the Lions ahead 55-42.
