SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- Mezie Uzochukwu scored 14 points and had seven rebounds to help South Carolina Upstate to its first ever win in the Atlantic Sun Conference -- a 73-59 victory Thursday night over Gardner-Webb.
The Spartans (3-13, 1-1) never trailed in the final 26 minutes of the game and put the game away with an 8-2 run to open the second half that put them ahead 39-30.
The Bulldogs (7-10, 1-2) trailed 50-41 with 8:28 to go, but S.C.-Upstate went on a 16-4 run over the next five minutes to take its biggest lead of the game at 66-45.
The Spartans shot 50 percent (29-of-58) from the field, compared to 36.4 percent (20-of-55) for Gardner-Webb.
Thomas Sanders scored 24 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Bulldogs.
