IRVINE -- Eric Wise made four consecutive free throws in the final seconds of overtime to lead host UC Irvine to a 78-74 victory over Big West Conference rival Cal State Fullerton on Saturday.
Michael Hunter sank a three-pointer with 25.3 seconds left in overtime to give the Anteaters (3-10, 1-0) a 74-71 lead. Wise grabbed a rebound, was fouled and converted both free throws two seconds later to give Irvine a five-point lead.Fullerton guard Marcio Lassiter hit a three-pointer with four seconds left cut the score to 76-74. Wise, who was fouled on the inbound pass, made two more free throws to put the game away.Senior Brett Lauer scored a career-high 27 points with six rebounds to lead Irvine. Wise, a freshman, added 25 points with eight rebounds as the Anteaters won at home for the first time this season.The Titans (6-8, 0-2) rallied from an 11-point deficit with 11:45 left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Jacques Streeter scored 23 points with seven rebounds and Aaron Thompson added 16 points with seven rebounds for Fullerton.Six of Lauer?s first seven baskets were three-pointers. At one point, he made four consecutive three-pointers and he finished with seven for the game.
